Sun travels on a chariot of 7 horses – Are Ancient Indians stupid to say this?

We are no fools to think that Sun revolves around the Earth, that too on a chariot of 7 horses. We knew Sun is the star of our Solar system & all the planets including earth revolves around the sun & It’s a universal fact.

But did you know the Sun in-fact travels?

“Yes, the Sun – in fact, our whole solar system – orbits around the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy. We are moving at an average velocity of 828,000 km/hr. But even at that high rate, it still takes us about 230 million years to make one complete orbit around the Milky Way!”

If so, then why it was mentioned in our Ancient Indian Vedas that the “Sun Travels on a chariot of 7 horses from East to West”? This is in fact meaningfully true in a different perspective.

What is prominence of Sun in Hinduism?

Sun also known as Ravi, Surya, Surya Bhagavan is the solar deity in Hinduism. Lord surya is depicted riding a chariot with seven horses. There are major festivals in India which are celebrated in reverence to Lord Surya which include Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Ratha Saptami, Kumbh Mela etc. This shows us the prominence of Sun in Indian traditions & Hinduism.

  • But why lord Surya / The sun was depicted with a chariot of 7 horses ?
  • Does it have any meaning or any scientific reason of depicting like that ?
  • Do you think Ancient Indians don’t know that sun doesn’t revolve?

Are Ancient Indians stupid to believe that sun revolves around the Earth?
– Nope. Don’t think so.

I’m not sure how many of you are aware of this but,

  • The epic Mahabharata opens its chapter on Surya quoting him as the “Eye of the Universe, Soul of all existence, Origin of all life”.
  • Also Don’t forget that our ancestors are one among the first civilizations to mention the solar system, stars & neighbouring planets.

So, do you think a civilization that’s so much advanced than today’s modern world, which knows that Earth is spherical in shape & aware of the solar system and Navagrahas doesn’t know the Sun won’t travel on a chariot of 7 horses?

Sun Travels on a Chariot of 7 horses

Here’s what mentioned in the Rigveda.

”Saptayujjanti Rathamekachakrameko Ashvovahati Saptanama

A verse from RigVeda 1/164/2

Meaning, Seven Horses are harnessed in the one-wheeled chariot of the Sun. In Reality, The One horse of seven names pulls the chariot.

Ancient Indians has a really interesting way to express and indulge concepts into our culture. There’s a deep meaning in that verse mentioned above.

What is Sun’s Chariot with 7 Horses? – Scientific Way!

As you already know, the sun won’t travel on any chariot & there are no horses. The in-depth meaning of that verse is that the entire solar system is illuminated by the rays of the SUN. Those rays are white in color because it consists of 7 colors in it. Namely Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. Also known as VIBGYOR. This is basic science we learn during our schooling. All those 7 colors combined gives us white color.

Seven horses are harnessed as one / The One Horse with Seven Names – One white colour with 7 colours in it,
Pulls the chariot of Sun – Travels as a light ray across the universe.

7 Horses of Sun's Chariot - Vibgyor - 7 colors combined in to one
VIBGYOR – From White Light

Lord Surya travels on a chariot from East to West? – Scientific Way!

In-fact I didn’t find any verse stating that line, but i did heard about this in various occasions.

So, what does it mean by the famous saying, Sun’s chariot of 7 horses travels from east to west. Again, it’s just an interesting way of expressing a natural occurrence in every day. From the above paragraph, we already understood that Sun’s chariot is nothing but the light ray & the seven horses are in fact 7 colours travelling together as one, light rays.

Sun travels on chariot from east to west is nothing but Sun rays starting at east & disappearing in west
Appearance of Sunrays from East

But on Earth, Sun rises in the east, as the rotates eastwards. And these emitted rays from sun that reaches the earth are visible to us only from EAST, As the earth rotates in that direction. No matter in which part of the world you are, you’ll always see the sunrise from the east (expect in North & south poles where there is no east & west). While the earth continues to rotate, we see the last of the rays disappearing in west, which is the SUNSET. Thus, it was represented as the rays are travelling from East to West, while the fact is earth rotating towards east.

I hope, this article helps you understand the real meaning and facts behind this statement & how it’s being misinterpreted to us by people who don’t have knowledge on these topics. Ancient Indian Vedas are repositories of vast knowledge we don’t know, and we can’t easily understand.

  1. The sun which we see or feel reaches the earth by light only. The light of the sun contains the colours vibgyor, which was scientifically proven by the western researchers and accepted by the world.
In the ancient Indian history sun was portrayed by travelling in chariot with seven horses. The seven horses represent the seven colours of sun light (vibgyor). The real meaning of the sun travelling with seven horses is the energy or the light which travels from the sun and reaches the earth contians seven colour.

  3. Actually, the entire system and galaxy move. Very rapidly. The Sun is constantly moving and pulling all of the Solar System with it. That applies to all bodies in the Universe. Even the center of the Universe is constantly changing its origin.

  4. white light is NOT seven colors! thats totally dependent on how you define color. there could be any number of colors in rainbow. infact earlier the acronym was vbgyor but to make pronunciation better they added an extra i for indigo.

  5. You said that Sun won’t travel on any chariot. The basic teaching of Sanathana dharma is that each tatva of this universe is controlled by different devas or deities and each of these devas are inturn controlled by one God which we call as Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, etc. We cannot perceive the things in the nature as it is with our naked eyes. Even with instruments if we see something, your brain and eye finally perceives it. So if we cannot see the Surya dev sitting majestically in a chariot and controlling the Sun globe, it does not mean that Surya dev and His chariot does not exists.
