After a baby is born, it is a general practice by the Ancient Indians to pierce the baby’s ears ( for both boys & girls). Technically speaking, It is a part of acupuncture treatment.
Acupuncture and Acupressure are not new to Indians. It is being said that these techniques originally originated in India and later they were conserved and modified by Chinese. Outer part of ears carry a lot of important acupuncture and acupressure points. The point where the ears of a baby are pierced is known for curing asthma. That is why even Ancient Indians both men and women used to wear ear-rings, but now a days most Indians especially Hindus are also not wearing ear-rings. They do not even pierce the ears after first piercing.
The holes in their ears become invisible after as they grow up. Only Indian females wear ear-rings as a tradition. But there are men in some parts of India who still wear ear rings as a tradition even now.
Almost Everything in the Indian culture and traditions are purely based on science. If we observe all our traditions and customs lead us to giving or ensuring us two things. Healthiness both physically and mentally. If you have those two, then you can earn anything else you want. They are the most basic things a human being should have.
Unfortunately , In our Indian customs and traditions that we follow, For some things we know the reasons, For some we don’t know ! Some People Say That these traditions are ‘Stupid beliefs’ and “blind superstitions”, But the fact is that many of us don’t know the real reason and real scientific reasons behind these traditions.
yes ……. indian culture is really great ……
poda pochu
Lakhs of and lakhs of Indian children died of Cholera, Small Pox and other deadly diseases and mostly they were all pierced in their ears. Pity, we, Indians could not find a better acupressure for curing these diseases by piercing some other organs. We should not forget that all these deadly diseases were cured only by Western scientists and Nobel Laureates who have invented life saving drugs and vaccinations and saved millions of children from death. Unfortunately we do not have any proof or statistics that how many children died of asthma because they were not pierced their ears all around the world
How many people (including kids) who died even after using english medicines..? Unfortunately we don't have any proof or statistics about it either. I didn't say that "if you don't pierce ears you will die of Asthma". I Mentioned it helps in prevention and curing of such cases.
Mr.Sasidharan I Suggest You to please go through the history and summary of Various medical fields like allopathy, ayurvedic, homeopathy. Please note that no particular field among the above is Bounded by limits. It depends on the doctor, how he suggests the way of medication to the patient. i can explain you more on this, but i suggest you have some clear and positive idea on those medical fields, treatment procedures and understand the article in a proper way, so that we can make a healthy conversation. Thank you

Nice reply sir
Ok can you give us stats on how many people who lived vs how many died after cunsumption of engligh medicine ? Our hindu system is prevention than cure. We are intelligent in many ways by enforcing preventive mechanisms in our body. This is now being ridiculed by people like you in the society without even appraising the positive effects . After numerous inventions of english medicines, how many deaths have reduced? If I ask you to do the stat work, you will have to spend your 10 lives to and say that many deaths are only there rather than saves. If you are born and bought up here in India under your mon/dad who belong to 1930’s till 1980’s , you probably would have gone through all these rituals, and you are staying healthy bcos they know our values. If you want to take it to next generation, be our guest. otherwise, stop ridiculing Hindu value system and culture and practices .
I believe not even 1% of population know that there are more than 100 varieries of Keerai ( leaf patha/ palak) available and being grown in south india. All of them are cure to all sorts of diseases in someway or the other. No one consumes them or encourage others. But Manufacturers appraise the effectec and create something called “Tablet” or “Capsule” and ask you to eat then happily you eat and say they are GOD!. This is a pitty situation. If you are a socialist create some awareness about natural way of living.
Well Said Kumar. Like our ancestors always said..
Hinduism is not a culture. It’s a way of living.
A Foundation laid by our ancestors , a path shown by them for the future generations, To live a happy , healthy and respectable life.
Also check out Oesteopathy
Even vaccinations have their limit …all who are vaccinated are not guaranteed of protection from disease ,they reduces their chance that’s all.. Here also its said the same…it gives some prevention may be and it might be done more scientific earlier than now, western science is just few years lived science and our Indian science of medicine is several century lived one may be it might be in an endangered state as due to the over influence of modern western science own us… We had much far advanced science than their…which we tried to forget
INCOMPLETE KNOWLEGDE IS ALWAYS DANGEROUS
MR.sasidharan
First go and research about it then comment on such matters
Hello Sasidharan,
Before commenting anything on anyone ,, please mind that we give some respect to the culture which is been followed through ages.
Well said…
But why Indians just wear gold earrings … if ear piercing are good means they can wear in any other metals right … is that got any reasons…?
Gold is a non reactive metal…Therefore won’t cause corrosion n won’t react to air water light like other metals….another reason is.. it is adequately found in india n is affordable by many rather than diamonds n platinum
If you are looking for a scientific reason as to why women and men wear gold is here. Gold is dia-magnetic which means it repels magnetic field. As we are on earth (hopefully you too!:) ), we are surrounded by magnetic fields. Our heart work on small electrical impulses for its functions. When these electrical impulses get opposed by earth’s magnetic field, power of the heart to pump the blood reduces. In order to prevent this, we wear gold.
Gold is a dia-magnetic substance and repels magnetic fields. As it is worn upto the heart position (in the form of pendants), heart will not get the interruption of earth’s magnetic field. Hence it does not need to do the ‘hard work’ to pump blood, which ultimately increases the life of heart.
All those apart, but how much worth injuring the kids for reasons unknown ?
Hello Manasa,
A straight and One word answer for your question. “Nothing”.
There are crores of people out there who never pierced their ears and i’m sure they are all living happy and healthy life.
This is just a tradition, a belief, that we follow. This post is just an attempt to let people know that our traditions are not just blind beliefs.
I’m sure our traditions are never meant to be forced on an individual that too in our generation.
One more thing i can’t stop myself from mentioning here.
“Your point of view is great and i completely agree with it”
Unless we know for sure what is beneficial to us we should not go in fir all this
Michael, You cant keep doing research for each and every small things that we do in our day to day life. Else you will end up doing only research and no effective work done! . Our ancestors have already done the research and prescribed what is the cure/medicine/ why you need to do something. So why waste the time on re-ensuring if its right to me or will it work ? Just follow and you will see the change in a course of time.
We are either ignorant or we dont want to accept it. Its up to individual.
With all due respect, the author speaks about science being the reason… But other than just pulling out statements such as without piercing, it’ll cause asthma.. There’s no scientific rationale given either. If we can find a scientific or logical reasoning to promote a practice, then I’ve no problem supporting it. But using fear, and just blanket statements that India is great is not going to cut it. India has a lot to offer to the world, but the world also has much to offer to India. It would help if we Indians became more accepting of all possibilities and cultures rather than just keep repeating India is great hence we should not question age old practices.
Its really awesome.
How ear piercing will cure or prevent Asthama.? Yes it’s true we respect our seniors and ancestors, but that doesn’t mean whatever they say just keep following without knowing the reasons. Because we have our brains which has the capacity to think, discuss, judge ,opine and decide.
And one more thing , after the discovery of antibiotics, many life are saved. Hi dears, think practical. No use of argument. Try to discuss. Don’t u think u ll treat ur kid with antibiotics if he r she not getting cured with home remedies, or u just keep plucking feeding and playing with palak ,methi, Tulsi and so on… Sorry , this is not to heart someone’s sentiments. Just a discussion.
I believe that every tradition made definitely has scientific reason and must have complemented those time in need. We might not know the right reason as we didn’t had culture of books previously. And reasons were formed to tradition culture and part of religion so that every one should follow it without much debate obviously for betterment.
Some of which might not hold true at today’s morden inventions and lifestyle. Debate can go endless and to different topics.
Ear piercing might have soming to do with accupunture as eartwisting bring alertness like teachers does in class to students.
Just because some of the answer we don’t get that doesn’t mean to criticize the our base. Rather we should find answer and try to educate people like us who wants to understand the logic, be morden yet wants to be rooted.
Well said….we are IN need of awareness
@ Curious Cat, even I go with what you say. I do also agree that Hinduism is a way of life. That said, to follow any tradition blindly, to chant a mantra like a parrot makes little sense. Perhaps, this is also the reason why the religion has so much undercurrent within itself. Am sure the true essence of Hinduism and its culture can only be appreciated by a mind that is calm and that is one with the nature. Which including me, is not that case with most of us. If it was so, our country would have been a much better place to live considering that 85% of us are Hindu.
I feel since in old days all men and women had earings and have to cut their hair, the first time they did it in the temple. Now since males do not wear earings, i think its not required for men.
When he becomes 15 years old, if he wants to put earing for fashion then he can do it himself
It’s a stupid tradition to pierce baby’s ears to protect from diseases as they happen by wrong foods and animal based products in kids.
If raise kids on vegan food, no need to pierce eras or any such crap.
Both English medicines and dumb Hindus rituals are bad.
Wake up. Eat right.
